Naco clinic moves to Mexico

by The Rev. Canon Carmen Guerrero

About two years the people of Bisbee, especially members of St. John's, Bisbee, John Mather of Cathedral Health Services, and the Rev. Tom Buechele (St. John's rector at the time), took the initiative to open a wellbeing health clinic in Naco.

The Naco Wellness Initiative clinic was located at St. Michael's Catholic Mission several hundred yards from the Arizona - Mexico Border. The Cathedral Health Services program from Trinity Cathedral, Phoenix made up the greater part of the health team of laypeople, doctors, and nurses that contributed their time and talents to care for people on both sides of the border with health needs.

As of Jan. 1 the clinic is now located on the Mexican side of the border. It became more and more difficult for people in dire need of healthcare to cross the Border to come and see the medical assistance available to them through the efforts healthcare volunteers from the Episcopal Church.

Several people from Bisbee and Douglas, including the Episcopal Church, began to look for a better solution. Led mostly by the care and concern of people in need, Tom Carlson became very instrumental in his attempt to work ecumenically as well as internationally to address this health need. There is now a clinic on the Mexican side of the border and in conjunction with doctors on the Mexican side, the clinic is now up and running again.

There will be a dedication on April 19 of the premises and all are invited to come to Naco, Mexico to thank God for this opportunity to literally live out our Baptismal Vows by "respecting the dignity of every human being" by caring for people in need of health care.

Comments:

Rev. Carmen: I have been keeping in contact with Tom Carlson in that I have been collecting supplies and instruments from my hospital as well as ready to feed baby milk to go to the clinics in Naco and the other three clinics there. Tom is having trouble finding a place to bring these supplies. The doctors there seemed interested according to Tom...I was wondering if you would have knowledge of where I can deliver these items. I have over a "van load" at this point and will have to stop receiving items till we can get a place to bring them. I am willing to drive there but need a location. Sr. Pat
